Saint Petersburg arrival guide

A calm first route for Saint Petersburg: leave Pulkovo without taxi pressure, connect to the metro, handle the weather layer, and choose the next practical task.

  • 1Pulkovo public transport connects to metro stations by bus routes listed by the airport.
  • 2Podorozhnik is the local transport card for metro and city transport.
  • 3Weather changes quickly. Keep one warm or waterproof layer reachable.

First Hour

1

Decide bus plus metro or taxi

Pulkovo lists current bus routes to the city and also warns against illegal private taxi offers. Pick your option before you step into the arrivals crowd.

2

Save the metro station, not only the hotel

Saint Petersburg is easier when you know the line color and nearest station. If your address is near canals or courtyards, save the entrance note too.

3

Keep a weather layer outside the suitcase

Rain, wind, and long walks between metro exits can make a short transfer feel much longer. Keep a jacket or umbrella available.

4

Choose a quiet first evening

If you arrive late, prioritize checking in, food, cash, and mobile connection. Leave museum tickets and day trips for the next morning.

Arrival Routes

Pulkovo bus plus metro

Best for

Daytime arrival with manageable luggage.

The airport lists buses 39, 39E, and 82E with destination metro stations. Check the Pulkovo page on the day you travel.

Yandex Go desk or app

Best for

Late arrival, heavy luggage, or a door-to-door route.

Pulkovo names Yandex Go as its taxi partner and says the airport does not recommend illegal private taxi offers. Keep cash ready if app payment is not set up.

Main rail stations

Best for

Arriving by train from Moscow or another Russian city.

Save the station name, nearest metro, and exit. Moskovsky station is central, but other stations require a different first route.

Move Around

Use Podorozhnik for repeated rides

The official metro page explains Podorozhnik top-up and activation. It is useful when you combine metro, bus, tram, or trolleybus.

Plan around bridges and water

Many central routes cross rivers and canals. At night, traffic patterns and bridge openings can matter, so check your route before leaving a restaurant or station.

Walk shorter, cleaner routes

The city is beautiful but large. In wet weather, a slightly longer metro route may be easier than a long walk with luggage.

Keep documents out of chats

Use official hotel and service channels for documents. Do not send passport photos to informal drivers or apartment intermediaries.

Before You Leave

  • Pulkovo or station route checked on the day of travel.
  • Metro station and exit saved offline.
  • Cash available for bus, taxi, food, or transport card.
  • Rain or warm layer reachable without unpacking everything.
  • SIM, payment, and emergency guides opened in Ruvoya.
